As a teenager growing up in Grenada, Eddie Bullen was heavily influenced by the beautiful music emanating from his father’s music store. It was mostly the music of Oscar Peterson(now 75 years old), Jimmy Smith, Kingsley Etienne, and his father's own band, the Harmony Kings. A little later he also came under the spell of Joe Sample of the Crusaders, Chic Corea, and Herbie Hancock. However he still fondly remembers the personal touch of Ralph Bullen, his Dad, who was adept not only on the saxophone but playing piano and guitar. He vividly remembers the many jam sessions by several Caribbean musicians , especially Kingsley Etienne, in the store. Although Bullen now plays the piano he started with the organ. This change could be attributed to the impression that Clive Zander left on him starting around 1977.
He says that Clive Zander, who presently lives in Trinidad and Tobago and still plays piano, was one of the first persons to put out an innovative calypso jazz album that he liked immensely. Bullen also likes the Latin and Caribbean musical twists that Chic Corea reveals in his rhythms. But it wasn’t until 1996 that Bullen really started his career in jazz. Before that he was mostly into producing pop music. Many persons would know of his work with SWAY Hands Up(the Club Med commercial song) Now he has two jazz discs which show that he has gained a great deal of expertise from his roots in the Caribbean and his work with outstanding artists in Canada. NOCTURNAL, the first release is more laid back, while MAKE IT REAL, released a few months ago, he considers to be more aggressive. MAKE IT REAL features more musicians than the 1998 NOCTURNAL. Bullen says that all of the young players brought vibrant performances to this latest album, and he is extremely pleased with the way it has turned out. All of the thirteen tracks are his original compositions except for Branches by Aldwyn Roberts. Some of the young and talented musicians on it are Nicholas Brancker (bass guitar), Alex Walker(soprano sax), Neil Braithwaite (soprano sax), Wilson Laurencin(drums), Muhtadi(percussion), Johnny Bullen (drums) and Rich Brown(bass). When one sees or listens to the stellar performances of Eddie Bullen one has a sense that artists such as Dan Hill, Oletta Adams, Liberty Silver, Salome Bey, Demo Cates, Michael Powell(producer for Anita Baker), Selections ( a gospel group), the upcoming R and B singer Kylah Styles, among many others benefitted from his positive energy and creative insights while working with him over the last ten years or so. Currently he continues to produce all kinds of rhythms from his Thunder Dome Sounds studio in Markham, Ontario, and perform at jazz concerts in several countries. Do look out early next year for another album from Bullen with two very cool jazz men from Barbados, Arturo Tappin and Nicholas Brancker. You will be in for another treat.
